On July 26, Mack McKinney was delivering a pizza to an apartment complex when he knew something was wrong. As the Riverdale, Ga., resident drove up, he saw people yelling and frantically trying to signal to him. "I opened the (car) door and the lady was like, 'Do you swim?' and I was like, 'Yeah, I swim,'" McKinney told CBS Atlanta.
McKinney saw a 13-year-old girl at the bottom of a pool. Apparently, none of the adults present could swim, he told CBS. The delivery man was shocked to learn that she had been there for almost five minutes. "I haven't done that (swimming) in like a minute, so when I jumped in, I was like, 'Whoa I forgot how to do this.' But then it snapped in and I got her out," McKinney said during a recent interview with CBS.
He pulled the girl out of the water, and a bystander gave the 13-year-old CPR until paramedics arrived. She was eventually taken to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, and is in stable condition, according to CBS.
McKinney went back to work, although slightly wetter. "I mean, I don't consider myself a hero. You know, I am a normal citizen, you know what I am saying, doing what I feel like most people would have done," he told CBS Atlanta.
