Pedestrian Dies After Being Struck By Megabus In West Loop

A 76-year-old woman died Tuesday after she was struck by a Megabus' mirror near her home in Chicago's West Loop.

Donna Halstead was walking in the crosswalk on Canal Street, near Union Station, when the bus attempted to make a left turn to Adams, the Chicago Sun-Times reports, around 2:20 p.m.

Halstead was struck by the bus's side mirror, which caused her to fall and hit her head on the pavement.

The woman was taken in critical condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where she later died, according to CBS Chicago.

Witnesses told the station that Halstead had the right-of-way when she was crossing Adams.

Shemeka Hudson, the driver of the Megabus, was cited in the incident for failing to yield to a pedestrian in the crosswalk, according to the Chicago Tribune. An investigation is ongoing.

The incident comes less than a week following a fatal Megabus crash in downstate Litchfield, Ill. that killed one woman and injured dozens of people. Investigators say a blown tire on the bus was likely to blame for the crash.
