Stars Shine Brighter When They're On The Board

When the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles saw four members of its board resign in July, the news was especially damaging: These weren't standard board members--they were artists, too.

The departures of John Baldessari, Catherine Opie, Barbara Kruger and Ed Ruscha amounted to a public vote of no-confidence in the museum's leadership. But the headlines sparked by the defections raised a deeper question: What is the purpose of having artists straddle the line between content creator and board member?
