Lakeview Sexual Assault Attempt Prompts Police Alert, Guardian Angel Watch (VIDEO)

Lakeview On Alert After Attempted Sexual Assault Break-In

Police have issued an alert after a man broke into an apartment on Chicago's North Side and attacked a female resident.

A 25-year-old Lakeview resident woke up around 5 a.m. Thursday to find a man in her apartment on West Newport Avenue, NBC Chicago reports. The intruder tried to sexually assault the woman, but fled when the woman's screams awoke her 24-year-old roommate.

The alert describes the attacker as a black man between 25-35 years old, 6-foot-1 to 6-foot-3, and weighing 180-200 pounds, the Chicago Tribune reports. He has close-cropped black hair and was wearing a long-sleeved dark-colored T-shirt and jeans.

The man reportedly stole some miscellaneous property from the residence before fleeing, according to Fox Chicago. Police are urging area residents to be alert, and make sure their homes and vehicles are secured.

The Guardian Angels, a citizen crime patrol group, were on the scene, patrolling the area through Friday morning, CBS Chicago reports. The all-volunteer team says they will be back in the neighborhood Friday night warning commuters and offering escorts to people traveling alone.

Area residents say they were startled by the news of the attempted assault.

"You just have to keep your guard up. But your guard goes down when you're in your own apartment, so I can't imagine going through something like that," Jamison Miles, a Lakeview resident, told ABC Chicago.

Anyone with information is asked to call Area North detectives at 312-744-8261 in reference to RD No. HV432581.
