New York Times technology writer David Pogue makes his living immersing himself in the latest tech developments. So it's only fitting his proposal to his girlfriend, Nicki Dugan -- a movie trailer about the story of their relationship -- went viral.
"On August 15, 2012, I proposed to the love of my life," Pogue explains in the video, which was posted on Aug. 18. "I made a fake movie trailer -- a thinly veiled version of our love story. I persuaded the movie theater at a summer resort to play it before a movie we went to see. Both of our families were there to see it. I hid a video camera to capture her reaction."
Needless to say, the reaction of his fiancee is absolutely priceless. At times laughing, at others crying, Dugan seems utterly floored by the whole gesture.
Getting down on one knee as the trailer came to an end, Pogue wraps up the spectacular proposal with a simple question.
"Nicki, I've never met a soul as selfless, as beautiful, as wise and funny as you and I am not going to let you slip through my fingers," Pogue said. "My dream is to be with you every day for the rest of my life. Nicki, will you marry me?"
Dugan, a Silicon Valley PR executive, responds with a wall-shattering affirmative. "Yes," she shouts, tossing her arms into the air.
It's not the first time that the Times' writer's personal life has made news.
In May 2011, Pogue and his estranged wife Jennifer were arrested and charged with disorderly conduct at their Connecticut home following a domestic dispute that "turned physical." Jennifer allegedly bit Pogue on the arm, and he was accused of hitting her in the head with an iPhone.
“I was assaulted with my own iPhone while I was lying on my bed reading a book,” Jennifer wrote in a "tell-all" letter to local news site WestportNow.
Pogue denied the iPhone accusation, and charges against both parties were eventually dropped.
The couple, who were together for more than 15 years and have three children, filed for divorce at the end of 2010.
In addition, Pogue's relationship with his new fiancee -- whom he has been dating since December 2011 -- came under fire after it was revealed that Dugan's company represents many of the products that Pogue reviews on his gadget blog, the Atlantic notes.
Nonetheless, there's no question that Pogue's proposal method was a stroke of romantic genius.
