PHOTOS: The Day That Changed Us

Like someone we know on a first-name basis, Aug. 24, 1992 is known to Floridians simply as “Andrew.”

The third time in recorded history that a Category 5 hurricane hit the United States, Hurricane Andrew sliced through Miami-Dade with a fury that shocked even the most storm-hardy residents. Roofs were torn from houses, mobile homes were flung with ease, and hundreds of thousands were left homeless as rescue turned to chaos in the face of unprecedented damages.

Exactly two decades later, with the destruction cleaned up and neighborhoods rebuilt, it’s easy to forget about Andrew on a day-to-day basis. However, once we start remembering, everyone has as story of where they were when that hurricane hit.
