Tom Ford Discusses The Perils Of Modeling With Tom Brady In V Man

Tom Ford Gives Advice To Gisele Bundchen & Discusses Why Modeling Is A 'Horrible' Job

Even though it was Tom Brady who graced the cover of VMan's Fall 2012 issue, we were much more interested in what he had to say about his pregnant wife Gisele Bundchen. Luckily, the football player didn't mind discussing the ins and outs of the modeling industry with interviewer Tom Ford.

Mr. Brady has plenty of respect for Gisele's career, saying, "I’m telling you, she makes it [modeling] look easy. Because it’s not easy, oh my god it’s not easy.” Amen, Tom. As a fashion industry insider, Mr. Ford takes it a step further and discusses the dark side of her job:

[Modeling] is a horrible job. I feel really sorry for models. I’m serious. It’s a horrible job. They get rejected and treated like they’re not even people... And, Gisele, I hope you’re not reading this, because it’s going to sound so negative but I know through some of my best friends who are really famous actresses–I’m not going to mention their names–who were at one point considered to be among the most beautiful women in the world at different periods of time, and how hard it is for them emotionally. So I hope Gisele is prepared for that, because it’s so difficult.

Well, at least nobody can say that the fashion designer held back any of his feelings. While we can't muster any pity for the Brazilian supermodel just yet, we can imagine how difficult it would be to navigate the style world without succumbing to its many pressures. And since models are only getting younger (and thinner), Tom brings up an interesting point about industry standards and celebrities in general. As a 32-year-old, Gisele is far above the normal age range for a successful modeling career, yet she's managed to become the world's highest paid model. So perhaps she'll end up being an exception?

We do understand Tom's point though -- this is a very fickle industry and there are clearly things that need to change. But hopefully, with a baby on the way, Gisele won't be too preoccupied with the fashion industry or being considered one of the most beautiful women in the world. As for Tom, we'll just have to wait and see if a real fashion change of heart is looming. Do you agree with Tom Ford about the problems with standards of beauty? And do you think Gisele is big enough to defy them?
