Wise Sons Best New Jewish Delis: Bon Appetit Gives San Francisco Restaurant Top Honors (PHOTOS)

'America's Best Jewish Deli' Is Right Here In Town

San Francisco's Mission District is not the most obvious place to look for a quality Jewish deli.

The Irish turned Latino turned ironic mustache neighborhood is known around the world for its gigantic burritos. But maybe it should be just as renowned for its pastrami on rye.

In an article published in Bon Appetit earlier this week, the magazine named the Mission's Wise Sons Jewish Delicatessen as one of the best new Jewish delis in the country and called its Semite Sandwich--pastrami, Swiss and a fried egg on rye--a "must order."

While Wise Sons has only been open since February, it's already claiming some high-profile fans.

Filmmaker Woody Allen, who has been spotted all over San Francisco filming his newest flick, popped into the deli last week for matzo ball soup, noodle kugel and an egg cream.

Another way we know Wise Sons isn't messing around: egg cream.

This isn't the first award Wise Sons has earned; Food & Wine also declared it to be one of the best sandwich shops in the country.

Wise Sons owners Evan Bloom and Leo Beckerman first teamed up catering weekly 250-person BBQ cookouts for UC Berkeley's Jewish Student Center and from there, took the increasingly common track for hot new restaurants in San Francisco. They started as pop-up, moved into a stand at a trendy farmers' market and then finally opened inside an actual storefront.

Wise Sons' secret: they close at 3 p.m. every day to make virtually everything they serve right on the premises, from the half-sour pickles to the cured and brined pastrami to the smoked whitefish.

“Short of growing the mushrooms on the roof, we're making just about everything,” Beckerman told 7x7. "It's insane, but this is our food heritage, and it deserves more of what it’s been given as of late."

The three other spots on Bon Appetit's list are Rye Delicatessen & Bar in Minneapolis, Brooklyn's Mile End Delicatessen and Stopsky's Delicatessen just outside of Seattle.

Bon Appetit has been giving San Francisco a whole lot of love lately. Just last week it named our very own State Bird Provisions the best new restaurant in America.
