Serena Williams was noticeably annoyed two days before the start of the U.S. Open when a reporter asked a question about her doing the controversial Crip Walk dance after winning the Olympic gold medal in women's singles.
When initially asked whether she thought the media blew her Olympic celebration out of proportion, Williams claimed that she didn't read anything about it, saying she didn't "know what was made too much of or whether it was too little."
Minutes later, another reporter again brought up the dance, asking if she had regretted doing the Crip Walk in front of everybody. The reporter prefaced her question by saying "You of all people know the crip walk is not just a dance."
"First of all, it was just a dance. I didn't know that's what it was called," Williams responded tersely. "Secondly, why are you asking me that? Like, that's so.. I mean, if anything you should be trying to ask me questions to lift me up, not bring up such things."
The reporter tried to interject, but Williams quickly ended the discussion saying, "I'm done with that question."
The 30-year-old who grew up in Compton faced criticism from the media for celebrating at the Olympics by doing the dance that originated with the street gang in Los Angeles.
Shortly after winning the gold medal, a reporter unfamiliar with the dance asked Williams what it should be called
"Actually, there is a name. But I don't know if I -- it's inappropriate. It's just a dance we do in California," said Williams.
