Gabrielle Giffords To Lead Pledge Of Allegiance At Democratic National Convention: Report

Former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) will lead the Pledge of Allegiance at the Democratic National Convention on Thursday night, Roll Call reports.

Last month, Giffords, who was shot in the tragic 2011 Tucson shooting, reached a milestone on her path to recovery. In August, she announced that she was moving back to Tucson with her husband, retired astronaut Mark Kelly.

News that Giffords will make a surprise appearance at the Democratic convention in Charlotte on Thursday comes on the heels of the former congresswoman launching her new political action committee, Gabby PAC.

HuffPost's Jen Bendery reported on Tuesday:

Staying true to her Blue Dog Democrat roots, Giffords' PAC will be co-chaired by a Democrat and a Republican: Robert Reich, former Labor Secretary under Bill Clinton, and Trey Grayson, the former Republican Kentucky Secretary of State. Jan Lesher, formerly the chief of staff for operations for the Department of Homeland Security, will be the group's treasurer.

The PAC will only help Democratic candidates, however.

President Barack Obama will formally accept his party's presidential nomination in Charlotte, N.C. on Thursday night. The president was scheduled to deliver his speech at Bank of America Stadium; however, he will now speak at the convention indoors at the Time Warner Cable Arena because of a severe weather threat.
