Curious as to why the multiplex is so empty this weekend? Because Warner Bros. was initially set to release "Gangster Squad" on this date, but moved the film to 2013 after the tragic massacre at an Aurora, Colo. movie theater forced reshoots. (There was a scene in "Gangster Squad" where four men shoot-up a movie theater with machine guns.) Despite eight films getting a nationwide release between Sept. 21 and Sept. 28, however, no features were switched into the "Gangster Squad" slot -- a decision that not only hurts the studios bunching up movies at the end of the month, but also ticket buyers.
What audiences are left with amounts to slim pickings: "The Cold Light of Day" and "The Words" are being raked over the critical coals, while the indie film "Bachelorette" -- despite some major love -- is obviously not for everyone.
Things are also quiet on the music front, where Cat Power released the album Sun this week to great acclaim -- though not everyone was buying what Power (real name: Chan Marshall) was selling.
In the end, this was a week dominated by television, and two events in particular: The Democratic National Convention and the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards. About that latter ceremony: It stunk.
