The Trumpet Skirt You Need For Fall 2012, For Under $100 (PHOTOS)

Here's Why You Need A Trumpet Hem Skirt

Each time we flip through a September issue, we are stopped in our tracks at the Stella McCartney ads starring Natalia Vodianova. Sure, the Russian model (and mother of three) is stunning in her own right, but it's the cobalt skirt-and-top look that has us at "hello." The deep blue hue, boxy top and flippy, adorable-without-being-twee skirt. We attribute the coveting to the skirt's trumpet hem.

Wait. Who? What exactly is a trumpet hem (we imagine you rolling your eyes at the verbiage -- first a peplum, now this)? A trumpet hem is so named because the swingy hem mimicks the shape of the -- wait for it -- musical instrument after which it is called. Fun fact of the day aside, the takeaway here is that trumpet-hemmed skirts and dresses are incredibly flattering on all body types. Here's why: The volume at the hem is a nice balance to your shoulders (especially if you're a bold-shouldered gal), and the body-skimming shape at the waist and thigh is offset by the movement at the bottom of the skirt. Got it? Now get shopping.

Here are eight trumpet hem skirts, all for under $100.
