The Huffington Post is almost set to unveil its latest international edition — this time, in Italy.
L'Huffington Post is due to launch early Tuesday in Rome. It will be the Huffington Post Media Group's sixth global site, joining the editions in Canada and Quebec, France, Spain and the United Kingdom. HuffPost will collaborate with Gruppo Editoriale L’Espresso, which publishes the La Repubblica newspaper and the L'Espresso magazine, on the site.
HPMG President and Editor-in-Chief Arianna Huffington spoke to La Repubblica about the new venture. She said she was excited to bring the HuffPost mix of original reporting, curation and user participation to Italy.
"I'm sure there will always be a New York Times and La Repubblica," she said. "But we must also recognize that in certain circumstances any citizen can become a correspondent or a journalist."
Huffington said she wants to have "constant collaboration" between all of the site's European editions, especially with the Eurozone crisis still raging. She added that the European sites can also bolster the American edition with original material about the continent. "The world is getting smaller," she said. "What happens in China or in Europe is important for everyone."
Huffington also addressed the current wave of austerity measures gripping Europe.
"The austerity applied in Europe coincides perfectly with the clinical definition of insanity: endlessly making the same mistake and hoping that the result will be different," she said.
