Baltimore reliever Luis Ayala spent most of his day on the bench during the Orioles doubleheader on Monday, watching the games unfold from his seat past the outfield in the bullpen at Camden Yards. But despite his limited role, Ayala still managed to make a highlight-reel play.
In the top of the fifth inning of the first game against Toronto, utility man Ryan Flaherty smacked a solo home run over the head of Colby Rasmus to extend the O's lead to 3-0. As Rasmus watched Flaherty's hit clear the wall, Ayala stood up and caught the home run with his hat. Just like that, the reserved reliever grabbed some camera time.
The homer was Flaherty's fifth of the season. The catch from the bullpen, however, was presumably Alyala's first.
