This weekend, thousands are expected to crowd the shores and waters of Biscayne Bay for races, leisure boating, and parties in advance of Monday's Columbus Day.

Festivities are anchored by the weekend-long Columbus Day Regatta, sponsored by Bacardi. Currently in its 58th year, boating clubs from the Grove and Gables will face off again in competitive powerboat and sailing races Saturday and Sunday.

The races along the Miami shore won't be the only attraction, as revelers will pack the waters off Biscayne National Park's Elliott Key to party it up with music, booze, and bikinis in celebration of the unofficial start of Miami's festival season.

Anyone planning to join in on these events should expect a heavy law enforcement presence as the U.S. Coast Guard, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, and Miami-Dade police will be out in full force patrolling. Before you heading out on the water, here are few tips on how staying safe this holiday weekend:
