Ida Smith is a long-time resident of Hilo, Hawaii. And while it happened more than 20 years ago, she still remembers vividly that Christmas Eve when she discovered 23-year-old Dana Ireland. Their lives intertwined only briefly, but the impact lasted decades. "Sins & Secrets" told the story.

After being hit by a car and sexually assaulted, Dana Ireland wound up in the middle of the dense jungle of Hilo, Hawaii. It was there that Smith found her. Ireland was in bad shape, but she was alert. Smith contacted authorities, and then stayed by Ireland's side.

"I got her hand, just hanging on really tight. I said to her, ‘I’m gonna pray right now,’ so I prayed the hardest prayer I could," Smith said.

It took about an hour for emergency responders to make their way to the women -- Smith stayed by Ireland's side until they arrived. Smith then promised to visit Ireland in the hospital, but it all proved too much. The Honolulu Star-Bulletin reported that Ireland died on the operating table the next day, on Christmas.

Frank Pauline was found and convicted for the crimes against her, and sentenced to life in prison.
