In the fiinal minutes of the World Cup soccer final in 2006 the French captain, Zinédine Zidane, drove his head into the chest of the Italian defender Marco Materazzi. Mr. Materazzi, who had made reference to the Frenchman's sister, buckled to the ground. Mr. Zidane was ejected; minutes later, Italy had won. France was stunned.
