Playing a former U.S. Marine-turned-terrorist on Showtime's Emmy-winning "Homeland" is no easy task, but Damian Lewis has it under control.

“I know it looks like I’m thinking deep thoughts on the show," Lewis told GQ of playing Nicholas Brody. "But I’m probably just trying to remember my next line.”

The British-born actor may be great at faking "deep thoughts," but that doesn't mean he hasn't worked hard to get where he is today.

"I just feel incredibly lucky," Lewis told HuffPost TV of the critical reception of "Homeland." "And also at the same time a little bit smug because a lot of hard work paid off. That the show was a success so immediately I think it surprised us all. It was right out of the gates, everyone was talking about it."

"Homeland," also starring Claire Danes and Mandy Patinkin, airs on Sundays at 10 p.m. ET on Showtime.
