While the world was gushing over Beyoncé and Jay-Z cuddling courtside at the Nets game in Brooklyn this past weekend -- proving that they're hip-hop's cutest couple -- the beauty girls at HuffPost Style were busy analyzing Bey's new razor-sharp bangs. The "Love On Top" singer has flirted with fringe over the years, however, her latest brow-skimming bangs has a jagged finish in which her hairstylist, Kim Kimble, describes as "graduated."
"I just cut this for her. The inspiration was '90s-era Joan Jett," Kimble told us. "Layered and cut down in a diagonal to frame the face."
We've also spotted bangs cut into gradual layers on stars like Britney Spears, Naomi Campbell and Rashida Jones, creating a cool juxtaposition to stick straight or braided hair. But what's the trick to keeping bangs smooth without weighing them down? Kimble's short answer: Flat iron and a little serum. Once you've blow-dried locks (with a heat protectant, of course), use a straightener on bangs and finish with just a few drops of hair serum to maintain sleekness and shine.
Another great pro tip that we picked up from Nikki Lee, co-owner of Nine Zero One Salon in West Hollywood, is to also keep dry shampoo and dryer sheets handy. "Since your bangs rest on your forehead (which has oil on it), the dry shampoo will soak that up and give your bangs the boost they need," Lee explains. "Run a dryer sheet along the inside of your [winter] hat before putting it on this will help eliminate any static or frizz."
