Four years ago when Barack Obama won the U.S. presidency, Turkey was captivated by the election of a man with Muslim heritage that they believed would make a positive contribution to regional security.

For much of his presidency, the country has prospered: posting one of the world’s fastest economic growth rates while flexing its diplomatic muscle in the Middle East.
