Grief Hoarders: Recovery Expert Warns Against Creating Shrines For The Dead

A difficult part of coping with the loss of a loved one is figuring out what to do with their belongings. In a segment for HuffPost Live, celebrity designer Nate Berkus discussed how this can be part of the healing process with host Janet Varney, author and grief recovery expert Carole Brody Fleet, and Simplicity Educator Beth Dargis.

Though she decided to keep a few of her late husband’s belongings, Brody Fleet warned that leaving entire rooms or spaces intact can hinder one’s recovery process.

“I don’t believe in shrines,” Brody Fleet said. “Because I feel a shine is counterintuitive to healing. If you are just walking past a shrine all the time, that keeps you in a place of sorrow. You gravitate toward what you are focused on. And if you are focused on a shrine, that’s sadness.”
