Ed Schultz fumed on his Tuesday radio show over a report in the New York Times that he may be replaced on MSNBC.
The Times' Brian Stelter, citing multiple unnamed sources, said there is chatter around the network that Schultz's 8 PM time slot could be given to Washington Post writer Ezra Klein. MSNBC denied the report, but it clearly got under Schultz's skin.
"I have overperformed in my time period for the third quarter and on my way to do that in the fourth quarter of this year, which puts me in bonus territory," Schultz said on Tuesday. "You know, money? I mean, that's how well we're doing at 8 o'clock."
He then read the MSNBC statement, which said there were no changes planned to the lineup.
"No changes planned!" he cried. "So I guess I'm on tonight? I assume I'm on the rest of the week. I assume that I'm on for as long as I can get you to watch! And this, in a sense, means that I guess I've arrived."
He called the report "media garbage," adding, "I think it's going to continue on and if it doesn't, who knows? My contract is just fine and life is good."
Schultz's tenure at MSNBC has not been trouble-free. He was suspended in 2011 for calling Laura Ingraham a "slut," and famously threatened to "torch" the network building when he felt he was not getting enough promotion during 2010. But he is currently MSNBC's third-highest rated host, which is not a bad place to be.
