In a bizarre effort to help her jailed boyfriend, a Chicago woman stole, then abandoned, a one month-old baby as part of a fake pregnancy scheme.
According to police, T’Keyah Williams, 19, wove an elaborate web of lies to fake a pregnancy, reports the Tribune. Williams allegedly hoped the plan would earn a judge's leniency with her boyfriend, who is charged with felony drug possession.
Williams abducted the child from an acquaintance, sending police on a desperate search through the Grand Crossing neighborhood Tuesday morning, reports the Sun-Times.
Temperatures were near freezing around 10 a.m. Tuesday when police prepared for the grim task of checking alleyway garbage cans for the missing child.
In a moment of silence, officers heard the baby's muffled cries from a nearby gangway in the 6800 block of South Ridgeway, said the Sun-Times. Police discovered the baby behind a garbage bag, where she was in a carseat covered by a blanket.
"I held her till her mama came, because I wasn't letting her go," said responding Officer Naomi Gibson in a press conference. The baby was rushed to Comer Children's Hospital and, according to ABC Chicago, is back with her family.
The police scanner radio reportedly "erupted" in cheers when officers announced the news, with Grand Crossing District Cmdr. Glenn Evans calling his officers' work "some of the best police work I’ve seen in my career,” reports the Sun-Times.
Williams, who was arrested on her 19th birthday, is charged with aggravated kidnapping and endangering the life and health of a child, reports ABC.
