The attack in the 900 block of North Michigan happened just hours after more than a million people packed downtown Chicago for the Magnificent Mile Lights Festival.

Jameela Ali, 28, told the Tribune her family went to The Grill restaurant in The Westin after after visiting the festival and saw her uncle, identified by ABC Chicago as Dr. Mir Shah of Oak Brook, Ill., struggling with a man dressed in all black outside the restroom.

Hotel employees sprang into action, and a 35-year-old apparent hotel employee was cut in the chest while trying to stop the robber, said the Sun-Times.

Police stormed the nearby Cheesecake Factory and took a man into custody near the John Hancock Center, reports the Sun-Times.

Both Shah and the 35-year-old man were hospitalized, and both are expected to recover.
