WASHINGTON -- It hasn't been smooth sailing for the introduction of the electronically tolled I-495 Express lanes on the Capital Beltway in Virginia. Numerous accidents have been reported at entry points to the new express lanes and there have been plenty of close calls, too.

While the 14 miles of new lanes have been open since Saturday, they'll be facing their first big test on Wednesday as out-of-town Thanksgiving travelers navigate one of the D.C. region's busiest roadways.

Fluor Transurban, which partnered with the commonwealth of Virginia to build and operate the toll lanes, is making changes to include better signage and improve lane markings at express lane entry points.

But as WRC-TV/NBC4 reports, officials have asked those living in the D.C. area to inform their out-of-town friends and family about the express lanes so they're not surprised.
