I absolutely refuse to buy my nephews another set of PlayStation video games or plastic dump trucks that end up in teeny tiny pieces for Christmas. So, they can always expect "Auntie Dana" to show up after they've shredded every piece of gift wrap bearing an armful of books. Blame it on my grade school years spent on the Principal's List, but I can't help but grin when I hear the boys blurt out all the "hard words" learned during storytime.
While searching the web for children's books to gift this holiday, I came across this manicure inspired by "The Very Hungry Caterpillar." Nail art blogger Diana translated author and illustrator Eric Carle's classic onto her sharp stiletto nails with uncanny precision. I especially love the small apple details that pay homage to the insect's ravenous appetite. Scroll down for Diana's seven-step tutorial for this DIY nail art.

1. Paint your nails with an opaque white nail polish.
2. Once nails are dry, arrange the green shades of acrylic paint on a disposable surface (i.e. paper plate). Swirl the colors together with your brush but do not mix.
3. Use a brush to make small oval dots for the body. Draw on a small oval shape in red at the end for the head.
4. Next, take the yellow acrylic paint and outline the top of the insect.
5. Create the eyes, fine hairs on top of the caterpillar and its antennas with black paint.
6. Use the brown paint to add the feet in small "L" shapes.
7. Finish your nail art by sealing with top coat.
