See, Mel Gibson really does have a soft side.

The “Braveheart” actor took two girls from Honduras who have each undergone intensive facial surgery, on a dream shopping trip earlier this month, TMZ reports. Gibson connected with the kids through Mending Kids International (MKI), his ex-wife's nonprofit, which performs surgeries on underprivileged kids worldwide and conducted the girls' procedures.

Gibson got them ice cream, lunch and American Girl dolls during their outing in Los Angeles, according to TMZ.

"It was really fun spending time with Karol and Sara,” the Academy Award-winner told TMZ. “They have been through so much and are just so inspirational to everyone who meets them."

A punitive measure first got Gibson involved with the California-based charity -- he was required to put in 16 hours of community service as part of his sentence in a battery case involving his ex-girlfriend, ABC reports. But the A-lister still remains committed to the nonprofit, even after completing his mandated volunteer hours.

Gibson fulfilled his service hours in June 2011 by spending three days with MKI in Guatemala City where he visited patients, helped coordinate humanitarian supply deliveries and helped out at a neurological clinic for children with disabilities, according to a release.

“It was a privilege to have [Gibson’s] help in planning the mission and to have him join us for this important trip,” Marchelle L. Sellers, Executive Director of MKI, said in a statement after the trip concluded. “He was obviously quite touched by the children in Guatemala who need specialized surgeries; we are incredibly grateful for his contribution to Mending Kids International.”
