Peter Alexander is NBC News' new White House correspondent, the network announced Tuesday.

Alexander, who led the network's coverage of Mitt Romney's 2012 campaign, will join chief White House correspondent Chuck Todd and Kristen Welker.

“Peter has proven himself as a sharp reporter throughout his eight years with NBC News, and consistently went the extra mile as he covered Governor Romney on the campaign trail," NBC News president Steve Capus said in a statement on Tuesday. "His dedication and hustle will be a strong asset to our talented White House team as he joins Chuck and Kristen covering President Obama’s second term."

CHUCK TODD EXTENDS TENURE AS NBC NEWS POLITICAL DIRECTOR AND CHIEF WHITE HOUSE CORRESPONDENT

DECEMBER 4, 2012 -- NBC News President Steve Capus today announced that Peter Alexander has been named White House Correspondent, joining Chuck Todd and Kristen Welker on the beat effective immediately. In addition, Chuck Todd will extend his tenure as NBC News Political Director and Chief White House Correspondent, as well as anchor of MSNBC’s “The Daily Rundown,” editor of NBCNews.com’s “First Read” blog, and frequent contributor to “Meet the Press.”

In his new role, Alexander will join Todd and Welker in covering the Obama administration for all platforms of NBC News, including “NBC Nightly News,” “Today,” “Meet the Press,” “Rock Center,” “Dateline,” MSNBC, and NBCNews.com. Alexander, who joined NBC in 2004, most recently led the network’s coverage of Republican nominee Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign. Alexander’s reporting earned recognition as one of POLITICO’s “10 breakout reporters of 2012.”
