After "Scandal's" shocking cliffhanger at the end of last week's episode, "Defiance," there are a lot of pieces of a very complicated puzzle to put into place in this week's episode, "Happy Birthday, Mr. President" (Thurs., Dec. 6, 10 p.m. ET on ABC). Most importantly: Who shot Fitz?
"Happy Birthday, Mr. President" promises to answer that question -- and they do, in the last few frames of the episode -- but in true Shonda Rhimes style, the answer will only leave you with more questions. A lot more questions.
But the ride to get there is a very revealing one, especially with Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) officially returning to work at the White House to help do damage control. There are a lot of memories for her there, mostly with Fitz (Tony Goldwyn), and we'll get to see quite a few notable ones via flashbacks to the first few days he was in office.
