One North Carolina family is spreading holiday cheer by handing out $100 bills to complete strangers.
According to UPI, the anonymous 'Secret Santa' family -- which consists of a couple and their daughter -- wore red hats with "Elf" inscribed on the back, and handed out $10,000 worth of $100 bills to complete strangers throughout Charlotte, N.C., on Tuesday.
Police officers escorted the extreme do-gooders throughout their rounds. According to the Charlotte Observer, the family had specific spots in mind -- First Ward Elementary school, a local battered women’s shelter, the YWCA and the airport. However, they also stopped randomly to hand money to people who looked like they were in need.
“I’m shocked. Oh my gosh, this is amazing,” Regina Brady, a third-grade teacher, told the newspaper when she was handed the money.
"Oh wow! Thank you. God is good!" said another teacher Leslie Weathers.
This marks the fifth straight year the 'Secret Santa' elves have passed out free money on the streets of Charlotte, reported News Max. The family was inspired by Missouri businessman Larry Stewart, who would also hand out cash to strangers during the holiday season.
The hope, the father told the Charlotte Observer, is that their actions will improve the lives of others during the holidays, even if only by a little bit for a little while.
"We can't change somebody's life, but we can give them hope," the mother added. "We can inspire other people to do nice things."
