High School In Washington Locked Down After Rifle Found In Classroom

Evergreen High School in Vancouver, Wash., went on lockdown Wednesday -- along with three other local schools -- as a precautionary measure after a teacher found a rifle and ammunition on the property, KATU.com reports.

Vancouver police spokeswoman Kim Kapp told the news outlet that the teacher who found the rifle called the police. No injuries were reported.

Melique Journet, a student at Evergreen, told KATU.com that students were told to turn off the lights in their classrooms and be silent.

The Evergreen Public School district, issued the following update on its website:

The lockdown is due to a rifle being found in a classroom at EHS at the start of the school day. Evergreen students were evacuated to Cascade Middle School while police search the campus. The student police believe is responsible for bringing the gun is in custody at this time.

The Oregonian reports that there have been SWAT team members on site at the school .

"The the students are safe," Carol Fenstermacher, a spokeswoman for the district told the news outlet. "There's police all over the place."

According to The Columbian, as of 10:30 a.m. Pacific time, police were still going through the school to search every room. One student told the news outlet that school staff members had searched their coats and waistbands for weapons.

The Columbian also reports that the lockdown has been lifted at the three other schools: Burton Elementary, Evergreen Early Childhood Center and Legacy High School. The news outlet added that Evergreen High School students are being released early.
