Letter From A Young Fan To Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

The following letter is excerpted from Dear Mr. Longfellow: Letters To and From the Children's Poet . Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882) was an American poet who was predominantly known for writing lyric poems. He was also a great translator. He was the first American to translate Dante's The Divine Comedy into English. Towards the end of his career, he became better known as 'the children's poet,' as many of his readers were children. This letter was written to Longfellow by a child fan to honor the poet's birthday and thank him for 'writing for the children':
