On his first emergency call ever, a 19-year-old volunteer firefighter swooped into a burning home and saved a woman fighting for her life.
Adam Hebert had only been volunteering with his local fire department in Acushnet, Mass., for six months when he got the urgent call on Sunday night that a home was ablaze, myfoxboston.com reports. The determined do-gooder rushed to the burning abode with two fellow firefighters in tow, raced up to the second floor and rescued a 52-year-old woman calling for help.
“Instinct came in,” Hebert told CBS. “It was, I know what I gotta do -- just do it.”
The fire, which brought heavy flames blowing from a side window, took about five to 10 minutes to extinguish. Though structure fires are rare in Acushnet, firefighters responded to a blaze 21 years ago at the same home, according to CBS.
Even though it was Hebert's first call, he told news outlets that he felt fully prepared to battle the blaze.
“Hero…I guess you can use the word ‘hero,’” Hebert told myfoxboston.com. “But, again, it’s not just myself it’s the department…I couldn’t have done it without them.”
