He may be one of the music’s most badass guitarists, but did you know that Dave Navarro is also a proud Mexican-American? The former Jane’s Addiction axe man recently spoke to NBC Latino about his ethnic roots and his love for rock n’ roll.

Opening up about his early days with Jane’s, Dave discussed his childhood friendship with drummer Stephen Perkins and the moment he first met legendary frontman Perry Ferrell. He also explained how he incorporates blends of hip-hop, Latin culture and rock into his playing style.

“I’m just as influenced by the hip-hop culture as I am Latino culture as I am by the rock and tattooing culture,” Navarro told the interviewer. “I honestly look at myself as a living entity on planet earth.”

But don’t expect any Navarro Spanish albums just yet. Dave went on to say that he’s yet to master Español. Of course, that’s nothing that a 2013 new year’s resolution couldn’t fix.
