South Shore resident Frank Johnson could use a lesson in negotiation tactics.
According to Chicago police, Johnson's landlord approached the 54-year-old to discuss eviction Tuesday night but rather than face time with Johnson, the landlord was greeted with an AK-47.
Police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli told the Chicago Sun-Times the landlord called police to report a man with a gun after Johnson pointed the assault rifle at him.
Responding officers arrived to Johnson's home in the 2000 block of East 72nd Street where they found more than just a man with a gun—they discovered the "gun" was an AK-47, along with what Mirabelli called a "stockpile" of ammo. According to the Tribune, police say they found nearly 400 rounds of ammunition for the rifle, extended magazines with ammunition and 36 rounds for a .357.
Though Johnson was fully stocked with ammunition, police say what he didn't have was a valid FOID card. DNAinfo Chicago reports Johnson allegedly told officers he didn't have a handgun because "the judge said I couldn't," according to court records.
Cook County ordinances consider AK-47s "assault weapons," which, along with large-capacity magazines, are banned in Chicago.
The man allegedly told arresting officers he used to be an officer with the Maywood Police Department claiming, "I used to be like you guys," according to DNAinfo. Maywood Police did not comment.
Held on $50,000 bond, Johnson appeared in court Wednesday on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, unlawful use of a weapon and possession of ammunition without a FOID card, according to police.
