The winning numbers for the Powerball lottery drawing on Jan. 16 are 9, 21, 28, 32, 51, and the Powerball number is 35.

The jackpot in the multi-state lottery stood at $90 million on Wednesday. There was no jackpot winner in the Jan. 12 drawing, although three tickets matched five numbers.

The lottery is played in 42 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Last November, a record Powerball jackpot of $580 million was split between two winning tickets in Arizona and Missouri.

The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are 1 in 175 million. A person is more likely to become president of the United States, date a supermodel or become a movie star than win the jackpot.

Because there are multiple ways to win prizes in Powerball, one's chances of winning some amount of money are actually pretty good: About 1 in 32.
