Gun Found In 7-Year-Old's Backpack At Wave Preparatory Elementary School In Queens

A loaded handgun was uncovered inside a backpack belonging to a seven-year-old boy at a Queens elementary school Thursday.

The New York Post reports a .22-caliber handgun was found inside the backpack at Wave Prepatory Elementary School in Far Rockaway.

The school went into lockdown and the gun was confiscated by a school safety officer.

No individuals were harmed, but CBS reports the gun was indeed loaded.

Authorities declined to identify the student and did not provide details of how the weapon was discovered.

The incident comes in the midst of renewed calls for gun control measures following the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting that claimed the lives of 20 students and six faculty members.

Earlier this month, the Staten Island Community Education Council voted on a plan to put armed guards in city schools.

On Tuesday, New York state became the first in the nation to pass gun control legislation after Sandy Hook.

The National Rifle Association has since blasted the new laws and said speedy passage prevented the lobby group from thwarting the effort.

President Barack Obama unveiled sweeping new gun control proposals on Wednesday. For more, watch below:
