"The X-Files" is getting the comic book treatment from IDW. The comic series picks up where second "The X-Files" film left off.
According to IDW, they're submitting everything for the new series that's launching in June 2013 to Fox and Chris Carter's Ten Thirteen production company for approval. IDW has also been in contact with "The X-Files" producer Frank Spotnitz, who might get involved with the comic series if schedules permit.
A creative team has yet to be announced. No word on whether the comic book will be an official continuation of the TV series a la "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" at Dark Horse comics.
“Few shows have captured the zeitgeist and fans’ imaginations like 'The X-Files,' and fewer shows still have left people hungry for more in the way this one did," Chris Ryall, chief creative officer and editor in chief at IDW, said in a statement. "Our new series will be picking up where the second film left off, which will hopefully be as exciting for fans to read as it is for us to develop."
Talk of a third "The X-Files" film has been bubbling for some time. In August 2012, David Duchovny said he'd be up for reuniting with Gillian Anderson for another feature.
"I would love to do another film, or more," Duchovny told Collider. "I think we're all game for it." Everybody might be game ... but the studio might not be. "I'm kind of perplexed that Fox isn't more [enthusiastic] ... You've got an actual action franchise that's your own ... Why not make a homegrown franchise that is excellent, and that has proven to be excellent and interesting? I don't get it, but that's not my business."
As for the possibility of an "X-Files" reboot, Spotnitz told Den of Geek in December 2012, "I wouldn’t be surprised at all ... I mean, I don’t think I would have anything to do with it but you know, for better or for worse, these things are titles of big corporations, like 'Star Trek' belongs to Paramount and 'The X-Files' belongs to Twentieth Century Fox and it’s a huge asset in their libraries so I can’t imagine they would let it sit languishing forever ... Anything could happen. I just hope that if they do it, they do it well, that’s my only request."
