With the help of his favorite pizza chain, a soldier serving in Afganistan gave his wife one "cheesy" birthday surprise.
Army National Guard Major Shawn Fulker wanted to send his wife, Josephine, a pizza and gift card from Mellow Mushroom Pizza Bakery in Fleming Island, Florida for her birthday last week. He emailed the company on Wednesday to ask if they could deliver the pizza to her home in Jacksonville, Florida, and said that he would call the store and pay with his credit card. He didn't hear back -- but later that day, Josephine emailed to tell him she had received a heart-shaped pizza (including heart-shaped pepperoni slices), balloons and a $50 gift card for Mellow Mushroom. The entire gift was free.
Josephine told ABC Monday that she was surprised and excited to receive the pizza, and Fulker called the gift "an unbelievable act of kindness."
“I miss my wife and son so much, and seeing that photo of them smiling at my front door brought tears to my eyes,” Fulker told ABC. “When I received [an] email and photo from Mellow Mushroom I was sitting at my desk, and had to get up and leave the room to compose myself. I am very grateful for that moment.”
Fulkner wrote in a Facebook post that Mellow Mushroom general manager J.P. Morgan's email said simply, "We got you bro."
"Hopefully in her husband’s absence we were able to help her have a great birthday while he’s over in Afghanistan serving our country,” John Valentino, the local Mellow Mushroom franchise owner, told ABC.
