Ahmadinejad Shoe Attack: Iranian Leader Reportedly Targeted With Shoe On Historic Egypt Visit (WATCH)

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad received quite the welcome on his historic visit to Egypt.

While Ahmadinejad was warmly greeted by Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, one man seemed to be less happy with the Iranian's trip.

A video released by the Turkish news agency Anadolu appears to show a young man trying to hit Ahmadinejad with his shoe -- an action that is considered a grave insult in the Muslim world. Instead, the shoe hit one of the president's bodyguards. (Watch the video above -- closely, it's difficult to see.)

In another famous shoe-throwing incident in December 2008, an Iraqi journalist hurled his shoes at U.S. President George W. Bush saying, "This is a gift from the Iraqis; this is the farewell kiss, you dog!”

The attacker, who attempted to hit President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as he left a mosque, is reported to be a young man with “a Syrian accent." Egyptian security forces managed to seize and arrest the man following the incident

According to ABC News, the Syrian man slammed Ahmadinejad for "killing his brothers." Iran is one of the most loyal supporters of the embattled regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The Atlantic Wire noted, however, that although initial reports pointed at an angry Syrian man, NBC later said that four Sunni Salafists were arrested in connection to the incident.

The scene reportedly occurred when Morsi and Ahmadinejad were leaving a meeting with Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb, one of Egypt's leading Sunni scholars.

According to Reuters, this meeting too, did not go without some troubles. "Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb, head of the 1,000-year-old seat of religious learning, urged Iran to refrain from interfering in Gulf Arab states, to recognize Bahrain as a 'sisterly Arab nation' and rejected the extension of Shi'ite Muslim influence in Sunni countries," Reuters reported.

Ahmadinejad is in Egypt on the first visit of an Iranian leader to the country in three decades. According to the Associated Press, the trip is "the latest sign of improved relations between the countries" since the start of the uprisings in the Middle East at the start of 2011.
