D.C. Residents Have Highest Student Loan Debt, Study Says

PHOTOS: Guess Which U.S. City Has The Most Broke Students?

Live in D.C.? Is your student loan debt so high it feels like the world is resting on your shoulders?

Well, you're not alone.

According to a report by credit monitoring company Credit Karma Inc., D.C. residents have the highest student loan debt in the country by far.

The average balance for a D.C. resident is a staggering $47,390. That figure places well above the $29,339 national average.

If you're living just a hop and skip over the border in Maryland, you too may be feeling the pain -- just not as much. Maryland residents boast the second highest average student loan debt at $33,727.

These figures may not come as a big surprise to everyone in the District. A recent study by Central Connecticut State University named D.C. as the most literate city in the nation. More than 28 percent of D.C. residents 25 or older hold a postgraduate or professional degree and over 50 percent have at least a bachelor's degree.
