During Obama's time in office, there have been four times as many guns purchased as babies born.
Americans had 16,107,665 babies between June 2009 and June 2012 -- the bulk of Obama’s presidency -- according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It may seem like a high figure, but the number pales in comparison to how many guns Americans have purchased. Since February 2009, there have been 65,376,373 background checks for Americans looking to buy guns, according to FBI data cited by conservative website CNSNews.com.
While the FBI doesn't track actual gun sales, the totals could be even higher because the same buyer can purchase more than one firearm, USA Today reported.
Gun sales have surged in recent months in the wake of the elementary school shooting in Newtown, Conn. Owners of gun stores have told several media outlets that they’re running out of ammunition and weapons as gun enthusiasts nervous about a potential crackdown on gun ownership are stocking up. Eight of the top 10 days for gun background checks since 1998 have occurred since the Dec. 14 massacre, according to FBI data.
Meanwhile, the U.S. birth rate has been plunging. Americans had fewer babies in 2011 than in any other year on record, according to CDC data cited by ABC News.
