A cop was arrested in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico, on accusations of raping a 12-year-old girl in his patrol car while intoxicated, the local press reported Thursday.
The arrest of Julio César Carvallo Márquez marks the latest in a series of gruesome sex crimes that has put Mexico in the international spotlight.
Carvallo Márquez visited the girl’s home to tell her that her mother had been arrested for public drunkenness, according to a report by the state prosecutor’s office cited by SDP Noticias. But instead of taking the girl to see her mother, the allegedly drunken cop drove her out to the city limits of Rosales and raped her, the report says.
Before returning her home, Carvallo Márquez threatened the girl with death if she revealed what happened, according to the report.
The mother, who had in fact been detained for drinking in public, filed a complaint shortly after her release, according to TV Notas. The girl identified Carvallo Márquz as the perpetrator and police arrested him on Tuesday.
Two other major sex crime cases have captured international attention in Mexico in recent weeks.
A 12- or 13-year-old girl gave birth to a child in January, after being impregnated by her step-father J. Abundio García Guadalupe, who now faces prosecution for statutory rape.
García, 44, admitted to having sex with his step-daughter in comments to reporters.
“I was drinking tequila there in the house and kept drinking,” García Guadalupe told Milenio. “Then she came and hugged me and we started, well, like that.”View video in Spanish below.
Early reports mistakenly said the girl was 9 years old at the time of the birth, citing the parents' claims. Prosecutors say the girl is between the ages of 12 and 13, based on an anthropological study, AP reports.
In separate case, six hooded men armed with guns broke into a beach house in the beach resort town of Acapulco and raped six Spanish tourists, according to Mexican authorities.
Mexican police have arrested six suspects, CNN reports.
