Money is tight for siblings Katie and Ryan Moi, but when they found $13,000 on the street, they still immediately decided to return the cash to its rightful owner.
“Obviously, we couldn’t keep it,” Katie, 21, told the Register-Guard. “When I had my laptop stolen, that was the worst feeling. I would not do that to someone else.”
The two were driving in Eugene, Ore., when they saw a bank deposit bag in the middle of the road packed with hundred dollar bills and paperwork that indicated it was from Reliable Credit, a firm that provides direct loans, according to the paper. Though the two briefly considered how the money could help them escape their financial problems, they decided to return the cash to the firm.
Though giving back such a large chunk of money would be a challenging decision for anyone, it was particularly tough for Ryan, 26, considering that he’s trying to get a new business off the ground and for Katie, who is still in college, ABC News reports. The pair also went to rehab to kick their alcohol addictions and admitted that a few years ago, they may have been more tempted to keep the money.
But their good deed didn’t go unrewarded.
Reliable gave Katie and Ryan gift cards and a reader who came across the story bought Katie a new laptop to replace the one that was stolen, according to ABC.
“That's kind of an example that my sister and I set, that you know, just because you've had troubles in the past doesn't mean that you're a bad person,” Ryan told ABC, “and, you know, people can turn around."
