PIXEL LED, Kickstarter Art Project, Is A Futuristic Artform With A '80s Feel

You see a mirror across the room, and approach to check yourself out. As you approach the mirror, a message appears. Across your reflection you are greeted with the message: "Smile, you're beautiful."

No, this isn't a Disney movie. This is a new art platform called PIXEL. Twenty-first century cutting-edge technology with a 1980s aesthetic, PIXEL is an animated LED art platform that you control with your phone, currently being funded through Kickstarter.

Upon first glace, PIXEL looks like a mirror, but once you've programmed some LED pixel animations, it becomes an ever-changing, animated personal art gallery. Download the PIXEL apps containing different displays to your Android phone and you can change the display as often as you like. PIXEL's creator Al Linke has teamed up with multiple pixel artists, so the user can pick from multiple still, animated or interactive (the PIXEL has a proximity sensor in it) artwork. Users and artists can also create their own artwork for the PIXEL. Some of the best examples below.

This is the best.

So is this.

And this.

"Who's the fairest of them all?"

According to the Kickstarter page, the PIXEL will begin shipping spring 2013, and will be available fully assembled and as a DIY kit.
