Rannells revealed Thursday that he would be returning for the HBO comedy's third season as Elijah after a scheduling conflict with his NBC show "The New Normal" forced him to leave four episodes into Season 2.
"It’s very exciting ... I don’t know what’s in store ... But my fingers are crossed that I’ll come back at least for a little bit more. I’m super excited for that, I’m looking forward to it," Rannells told Hollywood.com. Production on Season 3 of "Girls" reportedly begins in April.
HuffPost TV reported in January that Rannells would be stepping away from "Girls" after an action-packed four-episode arc that included a sex scene with Allison Williams and a cocaine bender with Hannah and subsequent falling out:
"I'm the luckiest guy in the world that I had this opportunity to do both of these shows, and it does come down to a scheduling thing and a timing thing. One is shot in Los Angeles and one is here [in New York]," Rannells told HuffPost TV. "Unfortunately, that's the way it works. I mean, if I could be in two places at once I obviously would have done it."
Meanwhile, Rannells' other project "The New Normal" is on the cancellation bubble, just like pretty much everything else at NBC.
"Girls" airs Sunday nights at 9 p.m. EST on HBO.
