Robin Roberts And The Myths Of Bone Marrow Donation

The return of Robin Roberts to "Good Morning America" has been heralded by countless notables, including President and Mrs. Obama, as well as her legions of fans. Those of us affiliated with the blood cancer and bone marrow transplant communities, however, are confronted with mixed emotions. On one hand, Robin's courageous and winning battle against myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), the rare blood disorder often called pre-leukemia or smoldering leukemia, thanks to bone marrow donated by her sister Sally-Ann, is cause for great celebration, inspiration and hope.

On the other hand, Robin's triumph over tragedy is far too often the exception rather than the norm.
