LA City Attorney 2013: Carmen Trutanich, Mike Feuer Will Face Off Again In May (LIVE UPDATES)

The 2013 race for LA City Attorney Tuesday appears headed for a runoff between Assemblymember Mike Feuer and City Attorney Carmen Trutanich.

The polls closed at 8 p.m. Tuesday. By 1:13 a.m. the next morning, with 78 percent of votes tallied in an unofficial city count, Feuer had won 43 percent of the vote and Trutanich 31 percent.

At around midnight, the Los Angeles Times and NBC LA said that the City Attorney election was most likely going to be decided in a runoff between the two candidates. Feuer and Trutanich will face off again in the city's general election on May 21.

By 1:13 a.m. Wednesday, candidates Greg Smith received 17 percent and Noel Weiss received 9 percent of the vote.

In the close race, Feuer has criticized Trutanich's track record and Trutanich has claimed that Feuer does not have enough courtroom experience. Smith, who has made millions of dollars as an attorney for police officers and firefighters claiming their employer discriminated against them, had positioned himself as someone who fights for Angelenos against government corruption and injustice.

In the USC Price/LA Times poll released Sunday, Feuer led the pack with 23.8 percent, followed by 16.4 percent for Trutanich, 15.2 percent for Smith and 4.7 percent for Weiss.

City Controller The Most Exciting Race

Even more exciting (statistically) than the mayoral race is the one to replace City Controller Wendy Greuel.

With 100 percent of precincts reporting, both Ron Galperin and Councilmember Dennis Zine are in a dead heat, each gaining 37 percent of votes.

That's the third runoff!

Mixed Messages?

With 100 percent of votes reporting, it appears that LA voters have chosen to reject a sales tax that would have bolstered emergency services but have also decided to open up the city's very generous pension plans to even more people.

Oh, LA.

Too Cool For School?

Is it cool for Angelenos to be ignorant about local issues?

Los Angeles Times political writer Jim Rainey offered his take on LA apathy on HuffPost Live Monday.

"If you don't even have an opinion or don't even know who the mayor is, you can go out and there's no social stigma attached to knowing nothing," said Rainey. "It's part of the local culture."
