Debra Messing has joined the cast of a CBS comedy pilot for the 2013-2014 season. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the "Smash" star will play Shira, a married mother who struggles to balance family and work. The pilot hails from Julie Rottenberg and Elisa Zuritsky and is based on an Israeli series.

Messing's character is a ghost writer for a celebrity chef and mom of three. The "Will & Grace" veteran will also serve as a co-executive producer. The pilot is in second position to "Smash." However, the NBC musical series has struggled in the ratings during its second season and has been shipped off to Saturdays. It's not expected to return for Season 3.

Messing took to Twitter when "Smash" wrapped filming and seemingly signaled the end of the show's run.

NBC has said the series will air all of its Season 2 episodes.

"Smash" airs Tuesdays, 10 p.m. ET and moves to Saturdays on April 6 at 9 p.m. ET.
