In the past decade, American support for gay rights has surged. In 2003, just 37 percent of the country supported legalizing gay marriage, but 10 years later, that number is nearly 60 percent. It's not just young people either -- people across the country have re-examined their views on gay rights, including Karla Robey, a Christian preschool teacher in Charlottesville, Va.
Robey's change of heart on gay marriage came after her daughter came out to her three years ago. Initially, Robey was not accepting of her daughter. "The initial reaction was not a favorable one. I relied on the teachings that were drilled into my head for you know, forty-some years," Robey explained to host Ahmed Shahib-Eldin in a segment on HuffPost Live.
"It took a long time for me to realize that she's my kid, and that's just the way it was going to be. It took a lot of talking, a lot of tears, and a lot of prayer to get to where we are."
